I was looking forward to this gig for a couple of week's beforehand as I knew this would be a rather special evening of noise.
Not only have both Exit by name and RSJ been featured bands on this website but they are playing together in middlesbrough for the first time in a while.
The venue is pretty busy when local metal/hardcore hero's Exit by name (and officially the loudest band in Teesside) take to the miniature red room stage. Now I've seen Exit by name a number of times over the last year, but something seems different tonight. Maybe it's the newer set of songs that have seen the band shake off a somewhat Nu-metal tag to a more hardcore sound, but still maintaining a polished and somehow bloody catchy set of tunes.
Some might say that the post hardcore/emocore boat my have already sailed for many bands developing this kind of sound, but exit by name have been around long enough to outlive the current trend of playing metal by numbers.
RSJ however bring an altogether different vibe to proceedings, and seem to scare off half of the locals with their full on brutal metal core sound.
The band however plough through their set with all the energy and enthusiasm of a band playing their first gig or headlining a major festival, which does win over the remaining crowd that haven't ran to the safety of the indie room to stamp their feet and shake the fashion mullet to the Libertines or whatever is in these days.
