It is all too easy for a reviewer to discredit a band for following a popular fad and just as easy to commend them for taking a different spin on an already successful genre. However, when a band does something so unique that it becomes slightly strange, it makes a reviewer’s job even more difficult as there is little to base comparisons on and nothing to regulate criticism or praise by.
From a second…’s sound is, well, insane. Guitars go off at their own tangent using fast and technical short pieces of melody, the beat is never steady or comfortable and the vocals are extreme, low and growling and barely comprehensible. The initial songs on the album just don’t make sense, they are a jumble of sounds with no real repeating sections or even choruses. However, later on in the album the songs become less intense and gather themselves a bit more structure, which makes them a lot easier to appreciate.
Elements of this album can be pretty random at times. The songs are sung by different characters, sometimes depicting a story and occasionally singing in different voices, which can be a little off-putting, especially as the new vocals take on a very melodic edge, including piano accompaniments, which is a bold contrast to the majority of the album. It’s hard to say who would be a fan of this band, but if you like your music heavy, confusing and experimental, then Delenda might be worth a shot.
