Psyopus – Our Puzzling Encounters Considered

‘Puzzling’ is certainly a good word to have in the title for this album. Psyopus are like nothing you’ve heard before. Whether this is a good or bad thing can only be decided by the listener, as it is not an easy job to try and define what genres the band actually cover, making it difficult to predict just who would appreciate them.

The guitar work is mental (perhaps not the most descriptive of words to choose, but definitely the most fitting) as it attacks you from all angles with no real rhyme or reason. The vocals and drums seem to be competing with one another to see who can make the most noise or fit in the most unexpected rhythm. With the addition of random sound effects (Track 1 – The Pig Keeper’s Daughter, features some lovely pig sound bites towards the end) and with effects used on the vocals, the ever-increasing layers of noise frequently reach peaks of confusion that will almost drive a listener to distraction.

This is music to be played loud. Preferably when you’re in a highly agitated mood or wish to inflict that emotion upon anyone else in the near vicinity. Psyopus are a band that just screams out, in the literal and metaphorical sense, to be seen live. If they perform with half the energy and insanity of their recorded material, then they will certainly put on a good show. Obviously very talented musicians with a desire to push music to the extreme, this is an impressive album. Even if you do not become a fan, it is worth hearing Psyopus’ work to hear what a band with no wish to follow the mainstream can do.
