Middian – Age Eternal

Middian use a unique style of instrumental elements for a heavy metal band. Rather than favouring rapid riffs and solos or double bass drum pedal work, the musical backdrop steadily chugs away, but never loses any of its brutal intent. The music also incorporates big build-ups, patiently leading into sections with more layers, more effects and more noise.

The music completely dominates the vocals, occasionally making the listener struggle to hear exactly what the vocalist is trying to achieve. Although, this may be intentional as the vocals are the weakest part of Middian’s sound, occasionally sounding a bit like Ozzy Osbourne on helium amongst the other few and far between vocals, which resonate in the form of distorted screams and gut-wrenching roars with a bit of singing thrown in here and there.

The epic way in which they format their songs – lengthy tracks ranging from six to fifteen minutes and using long introductions to get to the main bit of a song – leads to some interesting technical elements and some unusual techniques of song writing. However, when compared to other similar bands, such as Isis or Cult Of Luna, the parts that make you feel as though you’re waiting for something to happen verge on allowing the listener to almost lose interest. Whereas the aforementioned bands have the skill to build anticipation in their fans, Middian seem to be concentrating too hard on making songs of heroic length, rather than focusing their talent on more productive elements.
